Breast Asymmetry Correction

What is Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Breast Asymmetry Correction is a plastic surgery treatment that involves one or several surgeries that are meant to correct asymmetric breasts.

How does Breast Asymmetry Correction work?

The procedure involves removing breast tissue or placing a breast implant to equalize the shape and size of the breasts.

What is Breast Asymmetry Correction used for?

There are slight differences between the breasts in many people. Breast asymmetry correction is used in patients that have great differences between them. Even though most of the patients are women, men with visible breast asymmetry may also opt for this type of surgery.

Who is a candidate for Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Patients that want to get a breast asymmetry correction procedure will be evaluated by a plastic surgeon to determine if they qualify as candidates. The patient should be fully developed to be able to get the surgery. Patients that have various health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure may get the surgery, but the doctor will establish the best time for the surgery and will take some precautionary measures to ensure the procedure will not cause complications.

How is the Breast Asymmetry Correction performed?

The breast asymmetry correction is performed depending on the results desired by the patient. Some patients may decide to correct the breasts according to the smaller breast. In this case, the plastic surgeon will remove breast tissue, fat and skin and will also shape the larger breast to resemble the other one. The other breast may also be slightly corrected, especially if the patient desires a correction of the nipples and areolas.

If the patient wants to get the corrective surgery according to the larger of the two breasts, breast implants will be used. The patient can choose the type of implant to be used (silicone, saline solution or composite materials such as soy or other fibers).

What is the recovery like?

The recovery period depends on the complexity of the surgery. After the surgery, the patient will have to wear a constrictive bandage and will get pain medication. The pain is more severe if the patient gets breast augmentation, as the tissues are stretched. Antibiotics are also recommended to reduce the post surgery infection risks. The average recovery time after a surgery is up to 6 weeks. If the patient requires several surgeries, each will involve a recovery period.

What will the results be like?

The patient can expect more symmetrical breasts, but the optimal results will only be visible after the recovery period and after the post surgery swelling subsides. The results are not permanent and the breasts may change in shape with aging.

What are the risks?

Infections, excessive bleeding or unsatisfactory results are the most common risks of breast asymmetry correction. After a breast correction surgery, the patient may feel numbness in the breast that is modified. This lack of feeling may be temporary, but if nerves are damaged during surgery, the lack of feeling is permanent. There are risks associated with breast implants including implant rupture and capsular contracture.
