How is Lipoplasty Performed?

More Liposuction Surgery Information

Lipoplasty is performed by a cosmetic surgeon to help eliminate fatty areas that are resistant to exercise.  After an initial consultation, a patient will usually have body contouring procedures completed while under general anesthesia as an outpatient.  This means they will be discharged from the hospital or surgery center the same day that the surgery is completed.  Since the patient will usually be undergoing general anesthesia, they will need to have some basic pre operative testing done.  They will be asked to not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.  They will remain in the hospital or surgery center for a short time after the lipoplasty is completed and then, if there are no complications, they will be discharged.

Lipoplasty Procedures

Recovery time as well as the amount of time that the patient spends in the hospital or surgery center is dependent on which type of lipoplasty is performed.  Most surgeons currently use one of two types of liposuction: fluid injection liposuction or tumescent liposuction.  Both use similar techniques of injecting fluid into the fatty tissue that is going to be liposuctioned. This solution is made up of saline, a local anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor.  Fluid injection (or “wet”) liposuction usually requires general anesthesia; tumescent does not.  Tumescent liposuction generally takes longer however because the surgeon must inject larger amounts of fluid into the patient’s tissue and he then waits for up to an hour for the solution to soak into the tissue.
